Pakistan Federation Of Industry And Commerce: Strongly Opposed To Export Cotton To India

2008/7/17 0:00:00 57

Tanvir A. Sheikh, President of the Pakistan Federation of Commerce and industry (FPCCI), strongly responded to the news of the government's permission to export cotton to India. The India government has abolished import tariffs on 14% cotton, and India cotton importers are expanding their demand for cotton in Pakistan.

Tanvir A. Sheikh said that the annual output of Pakistan is about 11 million 500 thousand packs, the annual demand of the country is 16 million packages, and the gap exceeds 4 million packages. Pakistan imported 1 million 600 thousand bales of cotton from India last year. If the government does not prohibit cotton exports, the industry will face serious cotton shortages next year. This problem has already occurred. In recent years, the government has not paid attention to the export of wheat, and by the end of the year, it must import wheat at a very high price to meet its domestic demand.

Tanvir asks the government to make a negative decision immediately, otherwise Pakistan's textile industry will have problems. He said that allowing cotton exports to India is absolutely not in the interests of Pakistan.
